교회를 떠난 청년 자녀를 둔 부모 경험에 대한 질적 연구

연구 목적 : 본 연구의 목적은 자녀를 신앙으로 양육하기 위해 노력해왔음에도 불구하고 청년이 되어 교회를 떠난 자녀를 둔 부모의 경험을 이해하기 위함이다. 연구 내용 및 방법 : Smith 와 Adamczyk가 미국 종교인 부모들이 신앙을 어떻게 다음 세대에게 전수하는지, 특히 그들이 종교와 종교 전수에 대해서 가지고 있는 인식의 틀과 실천에 영향을 주는 문화적 모델을 발견하고자 심층면담을 수행했던 인터뷰 질문을 사용하였고, 데이터를 수집하는 과정에서 예상치 못한 발견, 곧 자녀들의 탈교회현상이 나와 그 현상에 대한 연구참여자들의 경험을 묻는 추가적인 질문을 통해 수집된 데이터를 귀납적인 방법으로 Nvivo 14 plus를 활용하여 분석하였다. 결론 및 제언 : 교회를 떠난 청년 자녀를 둔 부모들의 경험은 슬픔과 자책, 끊없는 성찰과 반성이다. 그러나 자녀가 교회를 떠난 이유는 부모의 신앙교육의 부재라기보다는 문화와 교회, 통제하기 어려운 세상, 성인 자녀의 선택 등의 복잡한 요인이 함께 작용한 것으로 보인다. 부모와 자녀 사이의 영향력은 일방적이기보다는 양방향으로 이루어졌고, 자녀가 신앙을 떠난 현상과 문화적 변화를 이해하기 위해 종교적 신념을 변화시키거나 불가지론과 신비를 인정하는 영역이 확장되는 경험을 하기도 했다. 교회가 공론의 장에서 목소리를 내는 방식, 탈교회현상으로 고통하는 성도들의 경험을 이해하고 지원하는 사역, 부모가 신앙전수에 대해서 가지고 있는 가정과 신념의 문화적 모델에 대한 비판적 성찰, 다원주의 사회에서 서로 다른 신념을 가진 사람과 진정성과 존중의 태도로 깊은 대화를 하는 방식의 훈련 등을 제언했다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to understand the experiences of parents whose children have left the church as young adults, despite the parents' efforts to raise them in faith. This study utilized the interview questions from Smith and Adamczyk, who conducted in-depth interviews to explore how religious parents in the United States transmit their faith to the next generation, focusing on the cultural models that shape their perceptions and practices of religion and faith transmission. During the data collection process, an unexpected finding emerged: the phenomenon of children leaving the church. Additional questions were asked to explore the participants' experiences regarding this phenomenon. The collected data were analyzed inductively using NVivo 14 Plus. The research findings show that the experiences of parents whose young adult children have left the church are marked by grief, guilt, continuous reflection, and introspection. However, the reasons for children leaving the church appear to involve complex factors, such as cultural influences, issues within the church, the uncontrollable world, and the autonomous choices of adult children, rather than simply a lack of faith-based parenting. The influence between parents and children was found to be reciprocal rather than one-directional. Some parents expanded their understanding by exploring shifts in religious beliefs or embracing agnosticism and mystery to comprehend the phenomenon of faith departure and cultural changes. Recommendations include: 1) Ministries that understand and support the experiences of believers struggling with the phenomenon of leaving the church; 2) Developing thoughtful and sensitive ways for the church to voice its perspectives in the public sphere; 3) Critical reflection on the cultural models of assumptions and beliefs parents hold about faith transmission and 4) Training in fostering deep, authentic, and respectful dialogue with individuals holding diverse beliefs in a pluralistic society.
