지금 한국의 대학은 세계화의 물결에 휩쓸려 큰 변화를 겪고 있다. 금융시장의 개방, 자유무역 협정의 확대 등 경제 분야에서의 일어나고 있는 변화는 한국 국민들이 일상적인 삶 속에서도 느낄 수 있을 정도로 상당히 진전되어 왔고, 교육 분야에서도 교육 시장의 개방에 따른 대학 간의 국제적 무한 경쟁, 국제적 대학평가에 따른 대학의 서열화, 세계 화된 시장에서 경쟁력 있는 인재를 길러내야 하는 요구, 비서구권 지역 출신 유학생의 증가 등에서 보는 것처럼 대학의 세계화는 거스를 수 없는 대세가 되고 있다. 기독교적 설립정신에 의해 세워진 기독교대학 들은 원하든 원하지 않든 이 같은 세계화의 대세를 무시할 수 없게 되었으며, 교목실의 학원선교 활동도 이와 같이 급격하게 변화된 환경 을 무시하고 이루어질 수 없는 것이 오늘의 현실이다. 이 글에서는 이 미 세계화가 상당부분 이루어지고 있는 기독교대학에서 기독교 설립정 신을 어떻게 더 효과적으로 가르칠 수 있는가를 고찰하고자 한다. 특히 가장 중요한 교목실 선교영역의 한 분야인 기독교이해과목 강의를 효 율적으로 하기 위해 어떤 고려를 해야 하는지 살펴보려고 한다. 우선 기독교이해과목을 강의하는 데 심각하게 고려해야 할 새로운 요소가 무엇인지 살펴보고, 필자가 6년 동안 외국인을 위해 기독교이해과목을 영어로 강의한 경험을 기초로 하여 기독교이해과목 강의안의 한 사례 를 제시해보려고 한다. 그리고 결론적으로 앞으로 더 필요한 연구 분야 가 무엇인지를 지적하려고 한다.
Abstract
Korean universities are in the midst of the irresistible drive toward globalization. The globalization in the area of finance and trade has changed everyday life of Korean people. Now universities are globalized fast as we can see in the changes as follows: the market of education industry is open to foreigners; the evaluation, and eventually, ranking of universities by the international standards; the need to raise globally competitive talents; increased inflow of foreign students. Christian universities are not exceptions in this change. Without an opportunity to think about the desirable direction of globalization, Christian universities are moving toward globalization fast. In this critical time, the chaplain’s office has to examine whether any creation or adjustment of campus mission policies are necessary to meet the changed needs. Among many efforts made by chaplain’s office for campus mission, teaching Understanding Christianity courses are one of the most important programs. In this paper, I would like to first examine what are important changes we need to take into consideration in teaching Understanding Christianity courses. And based upon my own experiences of teaching these courses in English for 6 years, I will propose a course outline that can by adapted into different settings. In the conclusive part, I will make some suggestions for more effective teaching of Understanding Christianity courses in a globalized campus setting.
