기독교적 리더십 배양을 위한 현황분석에 관한 연구

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to introduce and explore the servant leadership and to propose it as a model for Christian leadership in the 21st-century society. The article is based on the survey conducted to a group of freshmen of Yonsei University in 2008. The chi-square method is employed in the analysis of the survey from which the writers differentiate views on leadership between Christians and non-Christians, and also between male and female students. The following four aspects are questioned and subsequently analyzed: 1) leadership in general 2) Christian leadership 3) leadership programs 4) servant leadership. According the answers in the survey, responsibility and ability to commend are defined as leadership in general among its participants. On the other hand, service and inspiration are viewed as the two essential elements of leadership among the Christian participants. In terms of Christian leadership, faith, commitment, and altruism are regarded as the characteristic features of Christian leadership. One finding from the survey is that most of college students have no experience in any kind of leadership training. As for the definition of "servant leadership," most students understand it as leading others with humbleness. In analyzing the answers, the authors recognize the need to develop programs on character building for leaders. This necessitates the in-depth exploration and the redefinition of role models in leadership – their life, thought, ideals – and the examination on how to adapt their values to the present globalized society. Finally, the authors urge to seek for a common ground between Christians and non-Christians in the understanding on leadership, on which the servant leadership is to be further developed in the multi-cultural and multi-racial society.
