요한계시록의 “열린 하늘”과 구조 이해－ 공연비평적 분석을 중심으로

초록

본 논문은 공연 비평의 관점에서 “열린 하늘”(계 4:1; 11:19; 15:5; 19:11)이라는 주제를 중심으로 계시록의 구조를 분석하고 있다. 계시록 이해를 어렵게 해온 네 가지 난제들(다양한 문학 장르, 역사적 배경에 대한 이해 부족, 세대주의적 종말론으로 야기된 선입견, 해석학적 편견)을 확인하고 이를 해결할 수 대안으로 공연비평을 제안한다. 공연비평은 계시록이 처음부터 끝까지 공연되는 과정 속에서 계시록의 서사가 공연자와 청중 사이에서 어떻게 흘러갔는지를 재구성해 볼 수 있도록 돕는다. 계시록에 반영된 묵시적 종말론은 공연자와 청중을 “열린 하늘”로 대표되는 초월적 시간과 공간에 집중하게 한다. “열린 하늘”은 예언서 전통에서부터 하나님의 뜻과 계획을 드러내는 시간과 장소로 등장했고, 하늘의 성전과 보좌는 지상 성전의 부재 속에서 하나님의 임재를 상징하는 중요한 전통이 되었다. 이러한 전통 속에서 유대인 저자, 공연자와 청중 모두 열린 하늘의 중요성을 이해하고 있었기에 열린 하늘은 서사의 흐름 속에서 중요한 변곡점이 된다. 계시록의 각 단락(1:1-3:22; 4:1-11:18; 11:19-15:4; 15:5-19:10; 19:11-22:9; 22:10-21)은 “열린 하늘”을 보는 것으로 구분되며, 열린 하늘의 계시는 앞뒤 단락의 논리적 흐름을 이어주는 기능을 한다. “열린 하늘”로 시작하는 각 단락은 세상의 심판과 교회의 보호와 사명(4:1-11:18), 세상 속 교회의 보호와 구원 (11:19-15:4), 세상(바벨론)의 심판 (15:5-19:10), 마지막 심판과 교회의 구원과 회복(19:11-22:9)을 주제로 한다. 또한 네 단락 모두 하나님을 경배하라는 주제로 결론을 맺는다(11:16-18; 15:2-4; 19:10; 22:9). 계시록은 “열린 하늘” 체험을 중심으로 공연에 참여한 청중들이 하나님만이 교회의 구원자와 세상의 심판자이시며 유일한 경배의 대상이 되신다는 사실을 깨달을 수 있도록 구조화되어 있는 것이다.

Abstract

It aims to analyze the literary structure of Revelation with focus on the apocalyptic motif of “the open heaven”(Rev 4:1; 11:19; 15:5; 19:11) from the perspective of performance criticism. In consideration of the four major problems in understanding Revelation(different literary genres, ignorance of historical backgrounds, prejudice of dispensational eschatology and hermeneutic bias), it explains why performance criticism has to be taken into consideration in order to solve the problems and suggest a structure of Revelation which was performed in the late first century Ephesian situation. Performance criticism enables Revelation to be better understood in light of its own historical and literary situation. Interpreters attempt to reconstruct the way of performing the text by reading and hearing in consideration of the flow of the narrative from the beginning to the end. Apocalyptic eschatology embedded in Revelation helps the performer and his/her audience to focus on a transcendent time and space represented by “the open heaven.” The open heaven plays a role as a time and space to reveal God’s will and plan from the prophetic tradition. In addition, the heavenly temple and the throne in the apocalyptic tradition symbolize the presence of God in the situation of the absence of the Temple on earth. Since the Jewish author, a performer and audience can understand the significance of “the open heaven” in the apocalyptic tradition, they can pay the special attention to the same motif which repeatedly appears in the important turning point of the narrative. Each section(1:1-3:22; 4:1-11:18; 11:19-15:4; 15:5-19:10; 19:11-22:9; 22:10-21) is divided by the motif of “seeing the open heaven” and this motif plays a role as a transition point to connect the previous and following sections. The four sections in the middle reveal the judgment of the world and the protection and mission of the church (4:1-11:18), the protection and salvation of the church (11:19-15:4), the judgement of the world (Babylon) (15:5-19:10), the last judgement and the salvation and the restoration of the church (19:11-22:9). These four sections conclude with emphasis on worshipping God (11:16-18; 15:2-4; 19:10; 22:9). The performance criticism and the apocalyptic motif of the open heaven enable us to see Revelation structured with the intention to encourage the audience. At last they can expect the judgement of the Roman Empire and the restoration of the presence of God on earth.
