Abstract

It's a policy that one professional painter took part in the tribute missions to China such as winter solstice and special practice in Joseon Period. But, whenever there was a dispute about supernumerary of the tribute missions, government officials claim that a professional painter's name from the list. It was decided that a professional painter should take part in the tribute missions every three years in 1763. After the 19th Century, one professional painter gained the highest marks in periodic examination sent to Beijing as a member of winter solstice. In case of the special practice, a painter who the first embassy recommended joined in the party. A professional painter came to China played an influential role for buying paints, copying Chinese masterpiece, describing maps and landscapes in the itinerary and practicing the task ordered from embassies in the envoy. Besides, one professional painter acted in a reception committee for Chinese embassies sent to Joseon. They painted the landscapes, Chinese embassies passed from Uiju to Hanseong, Baekdu Mountain, boating in Han River and the welcome reception of royal rescript. Most of Chinese embassies asked painters to paint what they want such as bird-and-flower painting and landscape painting in their guesthouse. Chinese embassy A Ke-dun asked painter some paintings for his documentary painting Fengshitu, instead of folding screens presented to Chinese embassies. This paper tried to make the list of painters sent to China for the tribute missions. The work will help to reveal individual activity of painters in Sino-Korean diplomatic relations.
