Abstract

The goal of this paper is to connect the life of Songam Kwon Homun (1532-1587) with his poetic works, examining the aspects of the various emotions expressed in his works and studying the significance of these poetic works in terms of literary history. First examined were the aspects of emotions expressed in Songam's vernacular Korean poems, Hangeosippalgok and Dongnakpalgok. As a result, it was discovered that the two works were a sea of various emotions, such as the frustration and conflict that resulted from failing to pass the civil service examination, dissatisfaction with his own unfortunate situation, and the sense of pride and superiority he felt at not having been involved in politics. The next step was to determine how these emotions were related to Songam's actual achievements and what meaning they possessed. Emotions such as conflict over whether to enter politics or not and a sense of superiority about having avoided politics cannot be understood on the abstract level of simple psychological defense mechanisms or intellectual satisfaction, but must be understood as products of his life experience. Finally, inquiry was made into the meaning and value of Songam's composition of vernacular Korean poetry. Songam skillfully combined the enjoyment of life espoused by Nongam Yi Hyeonbo and the idea of literature as a tool of edification emphasized by Sinjae Ju Sebung and Toegye Yi Hwang, producing his own unique view of poetry, and he composed his vernacular poetry based on this view of poetry. In this regard, Songam is very significant in the history of Korean literature for the role he played in carrying on the tradition of the so-called "Lake and River" poetry of southeastern Korea in the 16th century.
