Abstract

Cho Hyun-woo, A Cultural Study on the Evil and the Evil Character of the Old Korean Novels, URIMALGEUL: The Korean Language and Literature 41, pp.191～216. In this study, I focussed on the evil and the evil characters of the old novels, from the early to the late times in novel history. The aspects of the evil in early novels are clearly different from the western tradition, especially the Christian. The property of the evil in early novels is the natural evil that the world as an antagonist uses an one-sided violence to the protagonists usually appeared as the best-looking but hopeless lovers. Since the Confucianism was the dominant ideology in Chosun, there appeared a character as the personalized evil. However, they were still configurated as the non-good under the Confucianism. But after the first appearance of evil character in Sassinamjeonggi(謝氏南征記) which has the responsibility for the overall conflicts of whole narrative, the evil and the non-good were divided into each other at last. The most important thing of this division, I think, was that the good and evil had been a substantial and transcendant area, not an human nature any more. (Daelim College)
