Abstract

The enlightenment period was a original time that modernistic ideas and conventions were formed. Ordinary, Most of conceptions and systems occurred in this time, which treated Literature as self-sufficing organization. There were bunch of things to need for appearance of modern Korean literature. For example, peoples should make up a philosophy to face with change of the world and reorganize traditional style of writing. Narrative editorial shows the changing of field in early enlightenment period and, particularly, help us to understand an appearance of modern Korean novel in various way. The purpose of this thesis is to study ‘Narrative editorial’ of The Empire Newspaper focusing on the basic thoughts and rhetorical features. According to materials, the fact can be cleared that the author of ‘Narrative editorial’ was Lee Jong-il. He rediscovered practical science(shil-hak) for enlightenment and independence of korean peoples. He was pursued modernization of korea depending on traditional philosophy. So, in that point, he can be distinguished from the intellectual who seek to onflow western civilization like Seo Jae-phil or Yoon chi-ho. One of the most important things is new media - newspaper, which had an effect on constituting of modern Korean novel. It was a new mode of Literary production and equipment for enlightenment. Because newspaper divided a section for obvious purpose and brought a homogeneous space, the styles of writing that had a peculiar difference was disorganized. At the same time, Newspaper produced new relation between author and reader. Lee Jong-il applied traditional style of literature to editorial inThe Empire Newspaper. In that process, he could make new style called 'Narrative editorial' and reorganize traditional short literature into rhetoric technique which become independent of custom.
