Abstract
This research is focused on the selection of zero anaphora. In terms of the choice of zero anaphora, 'Continue' of centering theory is taken as a main parameter. Based on cache model(Walker 1998), I will apply 'Continue' not only to the adjacent utterances in local context, but also to the utterances across discourse segment boundaries in global context. Accordingly 'Continue' can be divided into linear 'Continue' and hierarchical 'Continue'. With these two 'Continues', this study will elucidate the interrelation of other parameters, such as the linear distance of an antecedent, the case of antecedent and anaphora, protagonisthood, ambiguity in anaphora resolution, world shift etc. Zero anaphora is found differently in two types of linear 'Continue'. When a discourse segment is initiated with a discourse-initial presentative utterance, the usage of zero anaphora tends to be determined by the case of anaphora. The other type of linear 'Continue' is regarded as a favorable factor for zero anaphora in itself, and zero anaphora is well used especially when a sequence of events is evident. But even with an explicit sequence of actions, noun anaphora can be taken instead as a foregrounding device to highlight communicative importance. In hierarchical 'Continue', zero anaphora is used more widely, when the linear distance of its antecedent is 1. When the linear distance of an antecedent is more than 2, the usage of zero anaphora is determined especially by the case of anaphora, the ambiguity of anaphora resolution, and the sequence of events. Thus even though 'world shift' is strongly felt, zero anaphora can be used with the explicit succession of events.
