Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the unique methodology in Kim Hyun’s poetry criticism. He establishes his literary theory while writing the status of Korean literature and embodies the methodology for text analysis based on it. For this reason, the changes that occur after the status of Korean literature should be noted. This study typifies the methodology of his criticism of poetry and poets of the time and reveals the connection between those typified. Kim Hyun’s poetry criticism evolved from examining the poet’s imaginary world and its origins to analyzing the variations in poetic imagery and the structure of text. The former methodology is to explore the primitive experiences inherent in the work and its poetic variations. In particular, the establishment of the concept of form serves as a theoretical foundation for diversifying the methods of criticism. His methodology becomes more sophisticated as the relationship between form and structure is re-recognized and the relationship between the author and the work is understood to be homologous. This transition to textualism becomes more pronounced as the analysis of the counterpoint becomes the method of poetry criticism. He refers to the contrast between poetic images and the repetition of such contrasts as counterpoint. When conflicting things in poetry are found to be contradictoryly integrated, he recognizes analyzing them as the most important task of criticism. The counterpoint, as an in-depth structure of the poetry is not a technique intended by the author, but it is found during the analysis of text. His poetry criticism, which uses analysis and search of this as a method of criticism, can be called the art of discovering contradiction.
