Abstract

Searching for the Self Identity by Korean-American WritersCho Kyu IckYounghill Kang wanted to discern the Koreans' self identity and American dream in his novels The Grass Roof and East Goes West, Ronyoung Kim depicted the confusion and danger of the Koreans' self identity in her novel Clay Walls. They dealt with the passion of the Korean-Americans, the 1st generation. The hero's desperate figure who wanted to take root into the New World, eventually failed to was given shape to the Mr. Kang's works. A frustrated self who failed to return to the Old World from the New World was described in Ronyoung Kim's novel. The two heroes shows the contrary inclination about the desire of escape from their fatherland or attachment to it. Even so, they are homogeneous in fact that they are marginal or outskirts men. A sort of compensation to the inevitable inferiority complex is underlying in the background that Mr. Kang's hero introduced the old world's cultural tradition and described his own opinions about the western literature and culture tediously. Haesu, Ronyoung Kim's hero who could not help coming back to America from her motherland she missed to return and abandoning her motherland shows the real limitation and general emotion of the 1st generation's Korean-Americans clearly. The group who had a dream to go out of their fatherland were the intellectuals of the Korean immigrants. On the contrary, the people who turned down to root into the American society were the most of labors. The exact opposite appearances like these are two faces of Korean-Americans that will be lasted even in the future.
