<겨울여자>에 나타난 저항과 순응의 이중성

이 글은 1970년대 대중소설의 보다 다양한 양상을 살펴보려는 목적으로, 조해일의 <겨울여자>를 분석하였다. <겨울여자>가 동시대 다른 대중소설들과 차별되는 지점은 성과 가족 이데올로기에 대한 전복과 당대 지배 권력의 부조리를 고발하는 저항적 요소에 있다. 이화는 가부장제의 산물인 결혼 제도를 부정하고 성 해방을 택함으로써 전통적 가치관에 정면으로 대항한다. 또한 이화를 둘러싼 남성인물들은 각각 당대 정치, 사회, 경제 상황의 폭압성과 불합리를 폭로한다. 이러한 요소는 다른 대중소설에서는 찾아보기 어렵다는 점에서 전위적이라 할 만하다. 그러나 성적 해방을 선택한 이화의 각성이 자각이 아니라 남성에 의한 계몽이라는 점은 이 작품의 한계를 간명하게 보여준다. 이화의 행동에서 드러나는 작품의 모순성은 전통적 가치관을 부정하면서도 결국에는 남성 지배 체계로 회귀하는 모습으로 연결된다. 또한, 남성인물들을 통해 폭로되는 당대 지배 권력에 대한 비판 역시 이화가 지니는 모성애적 향수로 귀결됨으로써 서사적 힘을 잃게 된다. 이는 <겨울여자>가 대중소설의 비판적 평가에서 자유롭지 못하다는 사실을 보여주는 것이다. 조해일의 <겨울여자>는 지배 권력의 이데올로기에 대한 저항적 요소를 내포하고 있음에도 불구하고, 그것이 서사적 개연성을 확보하지 못함으로써 기존 인습체제에 순응하는 모순된 논리를 보이고 있다. 그러나 비록<겨울여자>가 서사적 모순성을 지니고 있다고 하더라도, 여타 대중소설과 차별되는 새로움의 요소를 간과할 수는 없다. 1970년대 대중소설의 다양한 양상은 개별적인 작품의 성과와 한계가 동일한 차원에서 논의될 때 보다 잘 드러날 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This article studies on Woman in Winter by Cho Hae Il as a part of work on popular fictions in the 1970s. Woman in Winter is different from any other popular fictions for the reason that it subverts ideology of sex and family, and it reveals absurdity of control power of the day. Yi Hwa opposes traditional value by prefers sexual liberation and negatives marriage that is a result of patriarchal system. And the male characters surrounding Yi Hwa divulge contradiction and oppression of politics, society and economy of the age. But Yi Hwa’s awakening is not self-consciousness but the enlightenment by the male character that shows the limitations of this fiction. Yi Hwa shows contradictive behavior by resists traditional value and at the same time returns to male’s control system. Also, the criticism about control power of the age loses narrative power because it tents to the nostalgia of maternal love which belongs to Yi Hwa. Although Woman in Winter by Cho Hae Il contains resistant elements about ideology of the control power, it exposes the inconsistent logic of accommodate to conventional system by fail to achieve narrative probability. But even if it shows the narrative contradiction, we should not overlook new elements and the meanings in Woman in Winter which is distinguished from any other popular fictions. The diversity of the popular fictions in the 1970s can be known when we discuss on fruits and limits of an individual fiction.
