Abstract

This thesis is an attempt to view the popular novels in 1970s objectively. For that intention, this thesis takes an intrinsic approach rather than an extrinsic approach. This thesis is focused on the fact that the texts of the popular novels in 1970s functioned as the fields of interactions of text-production and text-reception rather than functioning as the fields of injection of dominant ideology. As a result, many of those texts were based on the principle of compromising balance, in those texts, the dominant ideology and resistant ideology conflicted and compromised. As the patriarchal ideology and the structure of capitalism combined closer in 1970s, the popular novels in 1970s objectified the body of woman and dealt with sex more often. As a result, the texts of the popular novels in 1970s turned themselves into the fields of new cultural experiences in which readers of those texts enjoyed sexual amusement of seeing woman's sexual body along with the excitement of being seen (by someone). By taking a common narrative of the popular novels, those texts effectively made their readers strengthen this kind of amusement and excitement; by making them feel free of 'pleasure anxiety' by social customs. The popular novels in 1970s took the principle of compromising balance as the principle of the narrative. For example, by making ruined women such as prostitutes who don't follow the social customs sacred or by excluding them, the popular novels in 1970s developed the way of, so called 'compromising balance'. By this, those texts turned themselves into fields of cultural experiences where the patriarchal ideology got stronger. At the same time, readers experienced the possibility that they could overcome the patriarchism and conservative traditional ethics both of which had been prohibiting the release of sexual energy into the fields of public discourse.
