Abstract

So far studies on Russian modal particle ved' have been made on the basis of three characteristics of it. (A) Though ved' carries old information not new information, but the old information carried by ved' should not be activated at the moment of speech. (B) Pragmatic functions such as warning, reproachment, accentuation on the importance of message, justification, explanation, indisputability are the same as those of assertion. (C) Ved', no matther what its ultimate discourse is, basically has the function of showing politeness in that it actively utilize the information in the interlocutor's consciousness. Moreover it has several characteristics on the levels of informational status, kinds of speech acts and discourse strategies carried by Russian modal particle Ved' (1) Speaker constructs relevance between shared knowledge and current context through ved' (2) This relevance is prior-text-oriented in nature and finish current argument but does not source for following argument. (3) Proposition carried by ved' is assertive. (4) In argumentative discouses, ved' makes the activated information salient and does now allow confutation. (5) In non-argumentative discourses, ved' makes the proposition explanation or base for justification for his own statement. (6) Speakers avoid face-threatening situation using mechanism of politeness. (7) Speaking indirectly and making use of shared knowledge to avoid the danger of face-threatening.
