이 글은 박경리 『토지』에 나타난 자유연애 모티프의 양상을 분석하였다. 『토지』에 나타난 자유연애 모티프는 윤리적 주체에 의해 사회적 금기를 위반하는 유형, 이기적 주체에 의해 사회적 금기를 위반하는 유형, 이기적 주체에 의해 연애가 이루어지나 사회적 규율을 위반하지 않는 유형, 윤리적 주체에 의해 연애가 이루어지나 사회적 규율도 함께 지키는 유형 등 총 4가지 유형으로 구분할 수 있었다. 이상의 4가지 유형에 맞춰 윤리적 주체 여부를 가로축으로, 금기의 위반 여부를 세로축으로 하는 그래프에 총 33개의 작중 애정서사를 좌표로 그렸더니 다음과 같은 몇 가지 특징이 발견되었다. 첫째, 상위 서사의 연애 좌표가 대부분 1사분면에 모여 있었다. 이는 윤리적 주체 간의 애정이 제도나 관습적 금기 때문에 방해를 받는 경우이며, 『토지』에 나타난 애정서사의 가장 큰 특징이다. 둘째, 상위 서사 중에서 4사분면에 위치한 두 개의 좌표는 모두 작품의 후반부에 등장하였다. 따라서 상위 서사는 대부분 1사분면에 모여 있다가 일부 서사가 4사분면으로 나아간 것임을 알 수 있다. 셋째, 하위 서사의 연애 좌표는 절반 이상이 2사분면에 모여 있었다. 특히 2사분면에서 이루어진 금기의 위반은 이기적 욕망을 채우기 위한 겁탈, 외도 등 범죄 수준의 부정적 행위가 많았다. 넷째, 상위 서사와 하위 서사를 모두 합쳤을 때 1사분면과 2사분면에 위치한 좌표 수는 서로 비슷하며, 3사분면과 4사분면에 위치한 좌표는 거의 없었다. 이를 통해 『토지』에는 윤리적 인물과 이기적 인물이 엇비슷하게 분포되어 있음을 유추할 수 있었다. 『토지』에서 찾아 볼 수 있는 가장 명시적인 거대 서사는 구한말과 일제 강점기 동안 한민족 구성원들이 겪은 수난의 역사이다. 그리고 이러한 민족적 고난의 서사는 제도적, 관습적 금기로 인해 자유로운 연애를 할 수 없었던 수많은 개인 간 애정서사들과 구조적 상동성을 갖고 있다.
Abstract
This article analyzed the patterns of free love motifs in To-ji of Park Kyong Ni’s novel. There are four types of free love motifs in To-ji. First, the ethical subject violates social taboos. Second, the selfish subject violates social taboos. Third, the selfish subject obeys social rules. Fourth, the ethical subject keeps the social rules. According to the above four types, a total of 33 romance narratives were drawn as coordinates on a graph with the ethical subject as the horizontal axis and the taboo violation as the vertical axis, and the following features were found. First, most of the dating coordinates of the mail narratives were gathered in the first quadrant. This is a case where the affection between ethical subjects is disturbed because of institutional or customary taboos, and is the most characteristic of the affection narrative shown in To-ji. Second, there are two mail narratives located in the fourth quadrant, both of which appear in the latter half of the work. Therefore, it can be seen that most of the mail narratives are gathered in the first quadrant, but some narratives have advanced to the fourth quadrant. Third, more than half of the dating coordinates of the incidental narrative were gathered in the second quadrant. In particular, violations of taboos made in the second quadrant consisted of crime-level negative behaviors such as rape and cheating to satisfy selfish desires. Fourth, when both the main and incidental narratives were combined, the number of coordinates located in the 1st and 3rd quadrants were similar, and there were few coordinates located in the 3rd and 4th quadrants. Through this, it could be inferred that the To-ji had ethical figures and selfish figures similarly distributed. The most explicit grand narrative that can be found in To-ji is the history of the sufferings of Korean people during the late Joseon Dynasty and the Japanese colonial period. And these narratives of ethnic hardship have structural homology with numerous interpersonal love narratives that were unable to have free dating due to institutional and customary taboos.
