Abstract

This thesis focuses on the two compositions of ‘space’ and ‘death’ in coal mine poetry, and aims to identify the spatial characteristics of coal mines and the representations of ‘death’. This study is to examine the special space of coal mines and coal mine villages and the footsteps of life surrounding these spaces in connection with the actual/psychological ‘death’ they face in everyday life. The spatial characteristics of coal mines start from a special work site called ‘under the ground’ and ‘under the ground’. This is accompanied by the contradiction of disconnection from the outside world, alienation, and imbalance in social relationship formation, while advocating the image of ‘the curtain’. The death consciousness encompasses not only the actual situation of ‘death’ but also the fear of ‘death’, the illness of pneumoconiosis, and the devastating space after the abandoned mine. If a coal mine embeds ‘death’ while advocating the space of ‘branch’, the abandoned mine makes another type of ‘death’ experience in the name of ruins. Coal mining poetry embodies the dark sections of our era by embracing the reality of coal mining labor of contradiction and imbalance and various problematic typicals accordingly. The problem of labor reality such as coal mines, abandoned mines, and unemployment is spreading to the area of ​​creation as it emerges as a side of social critical discourse. This paper will provide a path to evoke the poetic reality of coal mines that have been neglected and to prove their position.
