Abstract

This study aims to analyze argumentative essays written by university students and to examine the characteristics of their topic selection and argumentative autonomy. A total of 302 essays collected from a required academic writing course at a university were coded and analyzed based on topic type (18 categories), levels of argumentative autonomy (direct, indirect, none), timeliness, and relevance to personal life. The results show that traditional topics such as law and politics were frequently chosen, and a significant portion of the essays simply reorganized external discourses without reflecting the writer’s own stance. In contrast, essays grounded in personal experience tended to exhibit higher levels of timeliness and persuasive power. In particular, topics that were timely and closely related to the writer’s life were more likely to involve direct argumentative autonomy. These findings suggest the importance of guiding students to select topics connected to their own lives in order to foster meaningful and self-directed writing
