초록
The purpose of this study is to focus on a ballet entitled Gudula's Daughter produced in 1902 by Alexander Gorsky, who was the Ballet Master in the Bolshoi Theatre, and shed light on the characteristics of the realistic ballet that he pursued throughout his lifetime. To achieve this purpose, this study analyzed the libretto and choreographic structure prepared by Gorsky himself and the critical reviews which were written about the ballet when it was first performed. This study, which was intended to ultimately highlight the meaning of ballet reforms Gorsky practiced, shed light on the fact that his spirit of reform resulted in the emergence of a new ballet style known as mimodrama - which used the language of mime to move beyond the framework of classical ballet and deliver a sense of reality to the audience - and revealed that it allowed the Bolshoi Ballet to transition from a world of fiction to an era of realism. This study of Gorsky holds significance, as it not only sheds light on the artistic world of the ballet master as an individual but also serves as a starting point for today’s study on Soviet ballet, which has yet not been examined extensively.
