Abstract

This study highlights the significance of the intricate narrative in A Raw Youth by closely examining its epilogue. The abrupt appearance of the epilogue's writer, Nikolay Semenovich, underscores the author's intention and offers critical insights into interpreting the novel's narrative structure. Within the epilogue, the tension between accidentality and necessity—at the levels of the novel, family, and society—partially reflects Dostoevsky's perspective. In A Raw Youth, Dostoevsky's whole viewpoint is illuminated through the hero Arkady`s connection to two characters: the Underground Man in Notes from the Underground and Aleksey in The Gambler. Through these figures, Dostoevsky critiques both extremes of accidentality and necessity, while affirming the value of striving for order amidst inherent disorder of life. This thematic framework is intricately linked to the novel's structural dynamics. The inclusion of the epilogue—which transforms A Raw Youth from a collection of disorderly notes into a cohesive novel—imposes retrospective order on Arkady's chaotic narrative. The phrase “тоска по текущему” captures the essence of the novel's narrative structure, embodying its central theme: the relentless pursuit of order amidst disorder and chaos.
