『環璆唫艸』는 1896년 러시아 황제 대관식에 사절로 파견된 역관 김득련이 쓴 사행한시를 모은 시집이다. 여기에 실린 시들은 형식과 산출상황에서 이중적인 성격을 가진다. 사행과 한시라는 전통적인 문화적 관습과 서구에 대한 경험과 사절단이라는 근대적 상황이 여기에 공존하기 때문이다. 선행연구에서는 최초의 세계일주 한시라는 측면에서 작품에 나타난 인식의 근대성이나 자기반성적 사고를 주목했지만, 한시와 사행이라는 전래의 전통이 새로운 문화적 환경 속에서 어떻게 대응하고 있는지도 살필 만한 문제일 것이다. 이러한 문제에 접근하기 위해 우선 김득련이 처한 상황에 대해 검토할 필요가 있다. 사절단 자체의 성격에서 볼 때 ‘역관’ 김득련은 역관으로서의 능력을 발휘할 기회가 없었다는 점을 주목할 만하다. 김득련은 사행의 기록자로서 활동해야 했으며, 이를 수행하기 위해서 재래의 인식과 문학적 능력을 활용해야 했다. 그의 한시를 통해서도 변화된 상황을 김득련 스스로 인식하고 있었음을 확인할 수 있다. 한시의 표현방식에 있어서는 김득련이 견문을 위주로 하며 이에 대한 자신의 인식은 배제하거나 간접적인 방식으로 작품에 투영하고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 간접적인 방식은 독자와 시인이 공유하는 문화적 기반을 바탕으로 형성될 수 있는데, 전고의 활용이나 동서양의 대비적 배치와 같은 것이 그 대표적인 예로 거론될 수 있다. 작품에 나타난 다층적인 간접적 표현 방식의 이해는 보다 다양한 층위의 작품 해석을 가능하게 할 수 있다. 이러한 고찰을 통해서 김득련이 서양의 문물과 문화에 접하면서 얻게 된 인식을 보다 풍부하게 살필 수 있고 동시에 그것을 표현하는 과정에서의 대응방식의 일단을 확인할 수 있다.
Abstract
Hwanguumcho(環璆唫艸, an anthology of poems about a round-the-world trip) is an anthology of poems written by Kim Duk-ryeon who had participated in envoy for celebration of Russian coronation in 1896. Poems gathered in this anthology have two contrastive features. One is cultural and literary tradition, the other is modernistic situation(circumstances). And the contact with the western world was difficulty problem to overcome. On these backgrounds, I focused on various efforts of Kim Duk-ryeon to cope with this situation. Kim Duk-ryeon was participated in the envoy in the capacity of an official interpreter. But he could not play a part as an interpreter, because he had specialize in the Chinese and that language had not been used in the western world and Russia. So he had to be a reporter and poet to describe their trip. But he tried to perform his duties through the traditional literary ways. For this purpose he had adapted himself to new circumstances. In the expressional method, he utilized indirect ways to express his own thoughts and opinions. As a result of these ways, his poems had a characteristic. It was summarized as the objective description without subjective opinion and view. But feelings and opinions produced in the trip were not eliminated totally. In some poems he had utilized knowledges or symbols which had owned in common to deliver his feelings and opinions. By decoding his recognition and opinion from these poems, we can closely investigate diverse aspects of traditional intellectual in 1890s.
