초록
Bargu-Buriyad is one of three major dialects of Mongolian in China, including three patois named as Old Bargu, New Bargu and Buriyad. This paper focuses on the New Bargu patois, explaining its vowel patterns and evolutionary characteristics. Using the “front-back” and “high-low”, the New Bargu’s vowels can be classified as front high vowels, front low vowels, back high vowels, and back low vowels. New Bargu contains only one front high vowel. The front low vowels /æ, œ/ are newly created phonemes. There are two back high vowels with contrasting RTR. There are four back low vowels, distinguished by lip rounding and RTR contrast. Compared to other Mongolian dialects, the most notable synchronic feature of the Bargu Mongolian is incomplete evolution of front low vowels. Front low vowels have emerged within the vowel system of New Bargu, due to the transfer of the feature [+front] from other phonemes within words. The emergence of front low vowels in New Bargu aligns with the evolutionary trend of Mongolian vowel systems. This phenomenon has already ended in the Chakhar and Baarin patois but remains ongoing in the New Bargu.
