비판적 사고는 논술의 기초이자 교육의 기초이다. 비판적 사고는 해설과 평가로 이루어진다. 문제와 해결방안들에 대해 제대로 해설하기 위해서는 독해력, 논증 요약능력과 같은 명료한 이해력이 필요하고, 제대로 평가하기 위해서는 사실적 지식과 논리적 사고력이 요청된다. 비판적 사고력은 기존의 지식체계에 대한 이해 및 평가와 관련이 있고, 창의적 사고력은 비판적 사고력에 기초한 발산적 사고이다. 문제에 대한 기존의 해결책들을 이해하고 평가해본 다음, 더 나은 해결책이나 새로운 해결책을 내놓은 것이 창의적 사고이다. 따라서 비판적 사고는 창의적 사고의 선행요건이다. 그리고 비판적 사고는 또한 창의적 사고가 실제로 효과 있는 대안 또는 해결책인지를 검사할 수 있게 해주는 도구 역할을 하기도 한다. 비판적 사고는 논술의 기초이다. 논술은 비판적 사고와 창의적 사고의 논증적 표현이다. 논술은 ‘논제와 논증을 해설 · 평가하고, 옹호 논증을 제시하거나 개선된 · 새로운 논증을 제시하는 것’이다. 논술은 비판적 사고보다 넓은 개념이다. 그렇지만 비판적 사고는 논술의 핵심 영역이다. 따라서 비판적 사고가 결여되어 있는 논술은 이미 논술이 아닐 뿐만 아니라, 다른 종류의 글쓰기나 말하기와 구별될 수 없다.
Abstract
Critical thinking is the basis of essay and education. It is broadly divided into exposition and evaluation. Exposition consists in setting out for study and discussion the view, position, claim, or theses together with the structure of argument. Evaluation requires some criteria by which to judge the argument. The truth of the reasons and the logical validity of the argument is two criteria of the evaluation. Accordingly critical thinking requires the factual knowledge and the logical thinking faculty. Creative thinking is thinking that results in the discovery of a new or improved solution to a problem. Critical thinking is the examination and testing of suggested solutions to see whether they will work. Both are necessary for effective problem solving. But creative thinking must be followed by critical thinking if we want to sort out and refine the ideas that are potentially useful. Essay is the argumentative statement of the critical thinking and creative thinking. Essay includes a critical thinking and creative thinking. And it implies an argumentator's view of world, life, valuation. However critical thinking is the very core of essay education.
