소크라테스의 도덕심리학 탐구-『메논』과 『프로타고라스』를 중심으로 -

초록

본 연구는 소크라테스의 도덕심리학을 탐구한 것이다. 특히, 플라톤의 대화편에서 보이는 소크라테스의 역설들 중에서 ‘사려분별의 역설’(prudential paradox)을 주된 대상으로 삼았다. 플라톤의 대화편『메논』과 『프로타고라스』에서 소크라테스가 ‘아크라시아’의 가능성에 맞서는 이유들을 확인해 봄으로써, ‘사려분별의 역설’에 대한 소크라테스의 입장은 보다 명확하게 밝혀진다. 소크라테스는 두 종류의 욕망(‘epithumein’와 ‘boulesthai’)을 활용하여, 사람들이 누구도 나쁜 것들을 욕구하지 않고, 비참해지고 불행해지는 것을 욕망하지 않는다는 점을 이끌어 낸다. 또한 같은 것이라도 거리에 따라 달리 보인다는 근접성의 측면과 ‘보이는 것의 힘’이 사람들의 욕구(욕망)와 열정들의 심리적인 작용과 관계된다는 측면에서, ‘보이는 것의 힘’과 ‘측정술’의 관계를 살펴보았다. 결국, 인간의 내면에서 작동할 수 있는 다양한 욕망들과 측정술을 포함한 지식이 ‘보이는 것의 힘’을 무력화 시키는 방법 등을 검토해 봄으로써, 소크라테스의 도덕심리학은 탐구될 수 있다.

Abstract

This paper investigates Socratic moral psychology. In particular, ‘the prudential paradox’ is the main object among the paradoxes of Socrates in Plato's dialogue. By examining the reasons why Socrates confronts the possibility of ‘akrasia’ in Plato's dialogues “Meno” and “Protagoras”, it is explored Socrates's position on the ‘prudential paradox’ more clearly. By utilizing two kinds of desires(‘epithumein’ and ‘boulesthai’), Socrates draw a conclusion that people do not desire bad things, nor desire to be miserable and unhappy. Also it is examined the relationship between ‘the power of appearance’ and ‘the craft of measurement’ in the aspect of proximity. And ‘the power of appearance’ is related to the psychological action of people's desires and passions. In the end, it can be explored Socrates' moral psychology by examining the various desires that can work within human beings and the ways in which knowledge, including measurement, is used to neutralize ‘the power of appearance’.
