Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine peace education through social and moral subjects in elementary schools in Japan. To this end, this study first established a conceptual framework for analyzing Japanese peace education from a theoretical perspective. Second, based on this framework, this paper analyzed and evaluated the content of peace education as presented in elementary school social studies curricula and textbooks. In summary, the findings of this study are as follows: First, the peace education presented in Japan's elementary school moral and social studies curricula and textbooks justifies the logic that wars were waged for the sake of the sovereignty and development of Asian countries suffering under Western domination in the past. Second, there is a tendency to downplay or omit Japan's colonial-era atrocities while emphasizing its own suffering, thereby reinforcing a collective narrative that is unilaterally imparted to learners. Finally, the content of peace education does not seek narrative change through self-reflection such as discussion, questioning, reflection, and introspection. Therefore, it is concluded that such education is unlikely to foster critical reflection on the past and present or provide insights into the future peace that must be built.
