Abstract
This study quantitatively analyzed a total of 933 papers published between 1996 and 2025 in Elementary Moral Education, the official journal of the Korean Society for Elementary Moral Education, to systematically examine the trends and structural characteristics of research in the field of elementary moral education. Six analytical categories were established—academic approach, research method, school level, research participants, author composition, and main keywords—and the method of quantitative content analysis was employed. The results are as follows. First, regarding academic approaches, pedagogical (approximately 43%) and philosophical (about 24%) approaches dominated, while psychological (about 16%) and sociocultural (about 16%) approaches appeared less frequently. Second, in research methods, theoretical studies accounted for about 80%, whereas empirical studies—including practical, qualitative, and mixed methods—comprised only 20%, suggesting a lack of affective and experiential research despite the practical nature of moral education. Third, in terms of school level, studies focused on elementary schools accounted for about 68%, while middle school-focused papers were about 9%. Fourth, studies involving preservice or in-service teachers each remained below 3%, indicating an imbalance. Fifth, in terms of author composition, single-author papers dominated (approximately 86%), and those involving schoolteachers accounted for only about 13.4%, revealing insufficient participation of field teachers in moral education research. Sixth, keyword analysis identified “moral education,” “character education,” “unification education,” “empathy,” “SEL,” and “instructional model” as core topics. In the most recent five years (2021–2025), emerging themes such as digital ethics, ecological ethics, AI ethics, and teacher education reflected ethical issues in future society. These findings confirm that the Korean Society for Elementary Moral Education has advanced both the academic legitimacy and pedagogical practicality of moral education over the past three decades. Future tasks include expanding sociocultural approaches, strengthening qualitative and practice-based research, fostering ecosystems for teacher-researchers, and establishing connections with international ethical education discourses.
