Abstract

Mozi’s philosophy of peace is articulated through a systematic triad of doctrines: jian’ai(兼愛), jiaoxiangli(交相利), and feigong(非攻). Since jian’ai is grounded in the principle of jiaoxiangli, it presupposes reciprocity of interests and can thus be interpreted as a form of altruistic reciprocity or a utilitarian claim rooted in pragmatic rationality. What is conventionally understood as universal love(jian’ai) is, in fact, grounded in a dispassionate calculus of utility. When this doctrine of jian’ai—founded upon the logic of benefit—is extended to the sphere of interstate relations, it yields the principle of feigong. In this sense, Mozi's feigong philosophy is comparable to modern international ethics and peace studies. Mozi does not advocate absolute pacifism; he acknowledges the legitimacy of zhufa(誅伐) while maintaining that genuine peace can only be realized when even such warfare becomes unnecessary. Moral education textbooks, written based on the 2022 revised curriculum, oversimplify Mozi's jian'ai and feigong philosophies, which risks causing misunderstandings among students.
