본 연구는 Savickas의 진로구성주의 관점에서 James Joyce의『젊은 예술가의 초상』의 주인공 Steven Dedulus를 통해 구성되는 서사적 정체성을 밝히고자 한다. 제임스 조이스는 이 작품의 집필 당시 자신의 천직으로서 작가와 생계로서 여러 직업들 사이에서 갈등을 겪고 있었고 이 작품의 주인공의 유년기, 청소년기 그리고 대학생 시절의 여러 에피소드들을 통해서 예술가로서 자신의 초상을 그려내었다. 본 연구는 이 작품 속에서 Joyce의 예술가로서 초상이 다름 아닌 생애집착, 자아이상, 직업적 흥미, 생애대본 그리고 인생모토로 이루어진 그의 작가로서 서사적 정체성임을 밝혔다. 본 연구는 이와 같은 분석이 진로구성주의 상담의 이해를 심화시키는데 기여하며 향후 독서를 활용한 진로구성주의 상담의 예시로 쓰일 수 있기를 기대한다.
Abstract
This study aims to reveal the narrative identity of Steven Dedulus, the main character in James Joyce’s Portrait of a Young Artist, from the perspective of Savickas’ career constructivism. James Joyce’s vocation as a writer was at odds with his livelihood; he painted his portrait as an artist through various episodes of the protagonist’s childhood, adolescence, and college life. This study reveals that Joyce’s portrait as an artist is nothing more than narrative identity as an author, consisting of life obsession, self-ideals, professional interests, life scripts, and life motos. Finally, this study hopes that such an analysis will contribute to deepening our understanding of career constructivist counseling and can be used as an example of career constructivist counseling using reading in the future.
