Abstract

This study aimed to develop reading materials for cultivating empathy in medical students and other care professionals with the Raymond Carver’s short story “A Small, Good Thing” is explored as a valuable literary resource for empathy education through a theoretical analysis. Firstly, the study reviewed various theoretical frameworks that outlined the multifaceted nature and phases of empathy. Subsequently, a textual analysis of the story was conducted, correlating the different types and processes of empathy depicted in the narrative. The findings suggest that “A Small, Good Thing” is an insightful reading material for understanding the constructive processes and relational dimensions of empathy. This study emphasizes the necessity for a comprehensive and alternative understanding of empathy, which is a process of transaction rather than an individual-level evaluation ability, in the training of care professionals, including medical students. It also advocates for the development of programs integrating diverse activities linked to the literary reading of “A Small, Good Thing” and recommends further research to evaluate their effectiveness.
