데카르트 『성찰』의 신적 기만 가설과 진리 인식 가능성의 문제

『제 1철학에 대한 성찰』에서 데카르트는 학문들의 흔들리지 않는 토대들을 찾기 위해 모든 의심 가능한 것들을 거짓으로 간주하는 방법적 회의를 수행한다. 그는 전능한 신 또는 기만하는 신이라는 이성의 확실성, 진리 인식의 가능성에 대한 위협을 함축하는 후기 스콜라 신학의 관념을 방법적 회의의 한 계기로 변형시키면서 당대의 스콜라적 전통과 대결을 펼친다. 신적 기만의 가설과 관련하여 제기되는 첫 번째 문제는 어떻게 전능하다고 말해지는 오류의 외적 원인으로부터 인간 정신이 벗어날 수 있는가이다. 이 문제에 관해 본고는 데카르트가 대부분의 스콜라 신학자과 달리 신의 선함(bonitas Dei)에 의지하는 것을 통해 신적 기만에서 벗어나려 하지 않았다는 점을 보여주려 한다. 두 번째 문제는 오류의 외적 원인으로 상정된 신적 기만에서 벗어난 인간 정신이 진리를 인식할 가능성을 가지고 있는지 아닌지의 문제이다. 이 문제에 관해 본고는 인간은 원죄와 불완전성으로 인해 초자연적인 외적 도움 없이는 진리에 도달할 가능성을 가지고 있지 않다고 생각한 스콜라 신학자들과 달리 데카르트는 인간 정신에게 스스로 진리를 인식할 수 있는 능력을 인정했다는 점을 보여주려 한다. 그는 더 나아가 확실한 지식과 학문의 형성을 위해서는 기만하지 않는 신(Dieu non trompeur)에 대한 앎이 필요하다고 생각했다. 기만하지 않는 신 존재의 증명은 인간 이성의 확실성을 뒤흔들 수 있는 부정적 토대를 의미하는 기만하는 신(Dieu trompeur)의 부정이다. 다시 말해, 기만하지 않는 신은 인간 이성의 진리 인식 가능성에 대한 부정의 부정이다. 기만하지 않는 신은 신적 기만에 근거하는 의심으로부터 벗어나 인간 스스로가 진리를 획득할 가능성을 가지고 있다는 사실을 긍정, 보증한다. 또한 기만하지 않는 신이 증명되기 이전에는 꼬기토의 확실성도 의심에 부쳐질 수 있지 않는가하는 문제에 대해 본고는 꼬기토와 같은 현재적인 지각은 신에 대한 인식 없이 확실한 것으로 알려질 수 있으며, 기만하지 않는 신은 기억의 진실성을 요구하는 결론들에 대한 지식의 확실성을 보증하는 역할을 한다는 점을 밝혀 보이겠다.
Abstract
In order to seek firm foundations of sciences, Descartes operates hyperbolic doubt in Meditations which considers all doubtful things as false. And he introduces two hypothesis of "God who is all powerful(Deus qui potest omnia)" and demon for radicalizing the methodical doubt. The first problem concerning the divine deception is to know if and how human spirit can liberate himself from so called all powerful external cause. The aim of this article is to show that, contrary to most of scholastic theologians, Descartes didn't escape from the divine deception by appeal to the goodness of God(bonitas Dei). The second problem is to know whether human sprit, which is liberated from the divine deception, has possibility to cognize truths. In this paper, I will show that, contrary to scholastic theologians who thought that, because of the original sin, human being is not able to attain truths without supernatural and external help, Descartes admits to human spirit ability to cognize truths by himself. He also thought of a demonstration of God who doesn't lie as necessary condition for science. The knowledge of this God assures the fact that, freed from possibility of doubts which are grounded on the divine deception, human being is able to attain truths by himself.
