라이프니츠와 칸트 사이, 18세기 전반기 독일의 자유 담론은 계몽주의적 자유와 경건주의적 자유의 충돌을 특징으로 한다. 계몽주의의 대표자 볼프는 지성적 인식으로써 행위의 충분한 근거를 이해하여 행하는 것을 자유라고 보았다. 반면 경건주의의 대표자 크루지우스는 신의 명령에 자신의 의지를 합치시킴으로써 외부적 조건을 초월하는 것을 자유라고 보았다. 한때 신학적 정통주의에 공동으로 맞서면서 연대하던 계몽주의와 경건주의 진영이 할레대학의 ‘볼프 추방 사건’을 계기로 분열한 이래, 두 자유 개념은 갈등과 긴장 속에서 독일 철학계의 자유 담론을 주도했다. 볼프와 크루지우스가 내세운 자유론의 대립 구도를 개괄하고, 칸트가 이들에게서 넘겨받은 철학적 유산에 대해 관심을 환기시키는 것이 이 글의 목적이다.
Abstract
In this article I will describe the characteristics of the freedom theory of German philosophy in the first half of the 18th century. Discourse on freedom at this time is characterized by the clash of Enlightenmental and pietistic Freedom. According to Wolff, the representative of the Enlightenment, freedom is to act with understanding the sufficient ground of action. On the other hand, Crusius, a representative of pietism, saw freedom as transcending external conditions by subjecting his will to divine command. Since Wolff was expelled from Halle University, this two concepts of freedom have led to the discourse on freedom in the German philosophical circles, repeating conflict and tensions.
