인공지능(artificial intelligence)을 탑재한 서비스나 장치의 사용이 점점 익숙해지고, 디지털 기기와 인간과의 상호작용의 범주가 지속적으로 확장되고 있다. 이러한 추세는 포스트 휴먼(post human), 인공지능 로봇 등의 다양한 존재자가 등장하리라는 예견이 더 이상 공상 과학에 불과하지 않다는 것을 보여준다. 인간 이외의 새로운 존재와 인간이 상호작용하면서 발생하는 윤리 문제에 대해 어떻게 대응해야 할까? 이러한 문제에 대응할 윤리는 기존의 윤리를 새로운 존재에게 확장하여 적용하는 수준을 넘어 새로운 윤리 제시로 나아가는 과도기적 위치에 있을 것이다. 플로리디(Luciano Floridi)는 정보 윤리학(ethics of information), 즉 피동자와 존재 중심적 거시 윤리학(patient-oriented, ontocentric macroethics)을 이러한 과도기적 윤리로 제안한다. 플로리디는 인간 중심주의적 관점을 벗어나 정보(information) 존재 자체에 도덕 지위(moral status)를 부여하고 정보의 관점에서 도덕 원칙을 구성한다. 이러한 자연주의적(naturalistic) 시도는 탈-인간적인 논의에서 필수적인 과정으로 볼 수 있다. 왜냐하면, 인간 중심주의를 극복하기 위해서는 인간적 관점과 거리 있는 자연(nature)으로부터 도덕 평가를 끌어낼 필요가 있기 때문이다. 그러나 플로리디는 자신의 논의 토대에 해당하는 자연주의 해석에 대한 자연주의적 오류 비판에 대해 비판 자체를 거부하는 방식을 취함으로써 근대 이후의 사고방식에 익숙한 학계에서 설득력을 얻기 어려운 한계를 보였다. 본 논문에서는 맥도웰(John McDowell)의 감수성 이론을 통해 플로리디의 자연주의를 보완하여, 플로리디의 정보 윤리학이 갖는 자연주의적 성격을 그대로 유지하면서도 자연주의적 오류 비판을 극복하고자 한다. 맥도웰의 감수성 이론을 통해 보강한 자연주의 방식, 즉 호모 포이에티쿠스인 인간의 감정과 문화에 대한 이해를 토대로 정보 존재에게 가치를 부여하는 방식은 플로리디의 자연주의를 이해하는 데 효과적일 뿐만 아니라, 탈-인간 중심주의적 윤리를 통해 도덕 존재 영역을 확장하고자 하는 시도들에도 유용한 전략으로 보인다.
Abstract
The paper aims to overcome the critique of the naturalistic fallacy faced by Luciano Floridi's ethics of information. Floridi proposes patient-oriented, ontocentric macroethics as the informaional ethics for the era of information. His main argument attempts to expand moral status to all beings, which was originally confined to humans, claiming that all informational entities have an intrinsic moral value due to their existence, which entails that human beings, animals, plants, and even non-biological entities deserve moral respect. Floridi’s ethics of information has been criticized for committing the naturalistic fallacy. This is because, according to G.E. Moore, when moral propositions are derived from natural facts, or 'ought' is derived from 'is' as Floridi does, it necessarily commits a naturalistic fallacy. However, Floridi does not take this critique seriously and it seems to be a critical weakness of his theory. This paper attempts to reinforce Floridi's naturalism through sensibility theory advocated by John McDowell, in order to overcome the critique of the naturalistic fallacy, while also maintaining Floridi's naturalistic perspective. The sensibility theory argues that moral values are simultaneous combinations of external properties and subjective minds. The paper argues that agents, understood as conceptualized in sensibility theory, can not only epistemically but also ethically reconstruct the world through the levels of abstraction. In his argument, Floridi did not verify how the levels of abstraction method can make agents reconstruct the world ethically, which falls prey to the naturalistic error. The argument of this paper expands the role of the levels of abstraction for both epistemic and moral reconstruction, with sensibility theory helping to defend against the naturalistic error and strengthen Floridi's naturalism.
