로티의 토대 없는 자유주의

이 논문의 주된 목적은 로티가 자유주의에 대한 밀의 기본 가정을 수용하지만, 허무주의적 상대주의의 위험성을 안고 있는 원칙 없는 자유주의를 견지함으로써, 자유주의의 우선성을 주장하는 데 실패하고 있다는 점을 드러내는 것이다. 밀은 자유주의의 근거를 ‘쾌락’이라는 공리주의의 원리에 둠으로써 자유주의의 이론적 지반을 마련한다. 반면 로티는 자유의 한계를 ‘잔인성을 피하는 것’이라고 분명히 말하고 있지만, 그가 세계를 완전한 우연성으로 규정 하는 한 그러한 주장을 뒷받침 해줄 아무런 근거도 갖지 못한다. 로티는 자유주의가 어떤 비순환적인 논변에 의해서 지지되어야만 하는 것은 아니라고 주장하면서 실용주의적 기준을 제시한다. 그러나 로티의 방법론 없는 실용주의는 ‘무엇이든 좋다’는 식의 상대주의의 문제를 피할 수 없기 때문에 잔인함을 피해야 한다는 주장을 뒷받침할 수 없다. 또한 ‘잔인성을 최고로 나쁜 짓이라고 생각하는’ 자유주의 아이러니스트는 일종의 당위를 전제하기 때문에 로티의 일관된 입장과 양립할 수 없다. 따라서 우연성에 근거한 로티의 실용주의적 관점으로부터 자유주의의 우선성을 확보하기 어렵다.
Abstract
The main purpose of this paper is to show that although Rorty accepts Mill's main point of view about liberalism, he fails in advocating the priority of liberalism. That’s because Rorty maintains liberalism without any principles which contains the danger of nihilistic relativism. Mill’s liberalism is based on the principle of utilitarianism, “pleasure.” However, Rorty cannot have any base which supports his suggestion that liberalism is avoiding cruel acts, as far as he considers our world of language as the contingent absolutely. Rorty suggests a pragmatistic criterion insisting that liberalism doesn’t have to be justified by a certain foundation. However, Rorty’s pragmatism without method cannot support his claim of liberalism. Because liberalists who think cruelty is the worst thing they do imply something we must do, it is uncompatible with Rorty’s philosophical point of view. Consequently, Rorty cannot held the priority of liberalism in terms of the contingency of the world of language.
