Abstract
This paper intends to make plain the concept of ‘mimēsis’ in Plato’s Republic. But Discussion of mimēsis in Republic 10 has not consistency, and the concept of mimēsis itself is not clearly defined. Thus the concept of mimēsis is explained by clarifying this inconsistency and unclearness. Discussion of mimēsis in Republic 10 has self-contradictory, and is not consistent with discussion of mimēsis in Republic 3. Republic 3 banishes only some imitative poetry, Republic 10 opens with the statement that all imitative poetry has been excluded from the good state, but nevertheless allows some forms of mimēsis, namely hymns and encomia. And it seems that Plato fails to define correctly the concept of mimēsis. Mimēsis means ‘impersonation’ in Republic 3, but it means 'representation’ in Republic 10. Nevertheless Republic 3 and Republic 10 contain a theory of mimēsis in visual and poetic arts that is remarkably consistent and detailed in certain respects. In these books Plato defines explicitly many characteristics of these different imitative arts. Therefore this paper grasps the concept of mimēsis through the analysis of Republic 3 and 10, and so largely consists of four part. First, it clarifies the definition of mimēsis. Second, it distinguishes ‘mimēsis with knowledge’ from ‘artful mimēsis’, and defines these mimēsis. Third, it discusses poetry as a kind of artful mimēsis by comparing painting. Last, it studies objects imitated of artful mimēsis.
