Abstract

An argument should not be mechanically judged as a fallacy based solely on their apparent form introduced in textbooks as fallacies. Since the presentation and evaluation of arguments is closely related to communication, they should be judged by comprehensively considering various factors such as context. This also applies to the fallacy called argumentum ad populum or ‘appeals to numbers’. The fact that a majority of people believe that A is good can be seen as good ‘apparent’ evidence that increases the probability that A is true. This raises the fundamental question of what is the difference between an argument that is truly fallacious and an argument that is not fallacious even though it has the same form. And additional questions external and internal to critical thinking are raised. The external question is the question of whether, if appeal to numbers is a fallacy, then democracy based on it is also a fallacy. The internal question is how the respect for common-sense is compatible with that appeals to numbers are fallacies. Regarding the external question, I will answer that the question is a mistake that confuses the concept of democracy and that democracy is not based on appeal to numbers. Regarding the internal question, I will argue that a respect for common-sense and an appeal to numbers are two different arguments. The difference is whether the belief in question has been formed publicly through an intersubjective process, and since the premise for the public formation cannot be included as an implicit premise, the appeal to numbers is a fallacy. This answer also provides an answer to the fundamental question. Lastly, I will add a suggestion that critical thinking or logic education should be more closely aligned with philosophy education.
