Abstract
The Purpose of this paper is to show that ho kalokagathos(a good and beautiful person) Aristotle suggests as an ideal person in his Eudemian Ethics Ⅷ.3 pursues to assimilate to God as much as possible. Aristotle compares ho kalokagathos with ho agathos(a good person) to explain who ho kalokagathos is. Aristotle explains the difference between them in terms of whether they consider to kalon(the beautiful) as their purpose or not. Ho agathos values to kalon, but only as a means of obtaining the natural goods (e. g. money, power, honor, etc.). Ho kalokagathos, on the other side, sees to kalon as an end. By examining what this difference implies, I attempt to demonstrate that kalokagathia (the good and beautiful), a virtue that makes a person ho kalokagathos, is to help its possessor not only fully possess individual virtues such as courage and temperance, but also develop a state of overall maturity and excellence as a rational being. This aspect of ho kalokagathos can be more elucidated by means of analyzing the standard ho kalokagathos has for the natural goods. In the end of Eudemian Ethics Ⅷ.3, Aristotle says that ho kalokagathos makes contemplation(theôria) and service(therapeia) of God the standard to choose and use the natural goods. It means that the life of ho kalokagathos is a life whose central activity is to contemplate and serve God: the contemplation of God refers to the activity of speculative reason; the service of God refers to the activity of practical reason that conforms to the order of the universe with God as its ultimate end. In the light of the interpretation of the standard, I point out that the life of ho kalokagathos consists in the pursuit of the assimilation to God and the participation in God’s life through both the activity of speculative reason and of practical reason. This shows why Aristotle describes ho kalokagathos as “the truly happy person”(ho alêthôs eudaimôn).
