Abstract

The dramatic development of new research area, called brain-based learning, brain-compatible learning, educational neuroscience, neuro-education, mind, brain education, helps to understand human learning through scientific findings of brain structure and functions. With the growing interests and efforts to apply brain science to education, substantial changes of theory and practice of teaching and learning are predicted. Despite of apparent benefits of the brain science for overall pedagogy and education technology, several researchers criticize that the discipline of neuroscience is far from the discipline of education in its philosophical and contextual approaches and is not appropriate to be applied to educational practice without enough verification. The reason of difficulty of verifying the result of brain science research was the absence of practical prescriptive theory like instructional design model or strategies. This study aims to synthesize principles extracted from major brain science and brain-based leaning literature and to develop instructional design strategies by each of design steps. The resultant principles were: plasticity of brain, emotional brain, ecological brain, brain with limited resources, and integrated brain, which were then transformed into instructional design strategies and arranged along the ten design steps. Comparison with existing instructional design theories and its theoretical and practical implication to educational technology area were discussed. It is hope that the exploration tried in this study helps to elaborate related findings and excavate future study agendas.
