본 연구의 목적은 우리나라 교사와 학생을 대상으로 독도교육의 방향에 대한 요구를 파악하고, 민족주의 관점에서 일본의 독도영유권 주장의 배경을 분석하여 독도교육의 방향을 모색하는데 있다. 우리나라 교사와 학생은 독도 문제를 일본의 배타적 민족주의의 부활을 나타내는 신호로 생각하고 그에 대한 저항적 민족주의로 대응하여야 한다고 인식한다. 민족주의는 특정 지역의 사람들을 하나의 가치체계로 종속시키는 일종의 정치 운동으로 타자와의 경계지움을 전제하기 때문에 배타적일 수밖에 없다. 이러한 민족주의의 배타성은 역사적으로 볼 때 호전적이고 배외적인 제국주의로 전이될 가능성을 다분히 갖고 있다. 따라서 독도교육은 일본의 독도영유권 주장에 내포된 민족주의의 위험을 경계하고 이를 합리적으로 비판할 수 있고, 시민적 애국심이 갖는 보편성에 기반하여 우리의 자유와 권리를 지키려는 의지와 지적 능력을 지닌 시민을 기르는 방향에서 이루어져야 할 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this research is to understand the demand of teachers and students about the direction of Dokdo education, and to analyze the background of Japan’s argument insisting on the dominium of Dokdo, and therefore, to search the possible future direction of Dokdo education. Korean students and teachers consider the Dokdo issue as the resurrection of Japan’s exclusive nationalism, and argue that they should react to it by a counter-nationalism against Japan. The best way to analyze this phenomenon is to understand the exclusive nature of nationalism, which, in many cases, turns into an aggressive and violent political ideology regarding other nations a subject of being subjugated. In conclusion, Dokdo education must be set in a direction of cultivating citizens who can alert about the nationalism implicit in Japan’s Dokdo dominium argument, citizens who can rationally criticize Japan’s arguments, and citizens who have the will and intellectual ability to protect our liberty and rights from Japan’s nationalism by the universality of civic patriotism.
