프랑스는 국제적으로 지리 교과의 위상이 높은 것으로 알려져 있다. 그러나 현재와 같은 교육과정 상의 지위를 인정받게 된 것은 1871년 이후로서, 1870년 보불전쟁에서 패배한 국가적 위기 상황을 맞이하여 프랑스의 지도층과 교육관료들이 앞장서서 위기극복을 위한 대처방안으로서 지리교육을 강화시켰다. 국가 사회적인 관심과 지원 속에 지리교육은 제도적으로 확고한 위상을 정립하게 되었으며, 학계와 교육계의 열정적인 노력으로 지리교과는 국가교육의 핵심적 지위를 확보하게 되었다. 이러한 맥락 하에서 프랑스의 지리 교육과정은 국토애를 통한 애국심 함양, 자국 중심의 국제 정세 파악이라는 교육 목적 하에서 지역지리 중심으로 내용을 구성하여 왔으며, 1960년대까지 이러한 경향이 지속되었다. 1970년대부터 학생들의 탐구 기능 습득을 강조하는 교육 철학이 도입되면서, 계통지리가 강화되고 지역지리 학습에서 기술적 방식을 탈피하여 설명의 논리를 도입하려는 시도가 진행되어 왔다. 2008년 개정교육과정은 지역지리가 약화되고, 계통지리가 강화되었다는 점에서 큰 변화를 예고하고 있지만, 지평확대 역전 모형과 나선형 교육과정은 프랑스 지리교육의 전통으로서 최근까지 교육내용 구성의 기본 형식으로 유지되고 있다. 이는 주지주의 교육철학과 교과서 중심의 교실수업이라는 전통에 기인하는 것으로 해석된다.
Abstract
France is internationally known for the highest level of the geography education. Since 1871 geography education in France was firmly established on an institutional basis. In the situation of national crisis by the defeat in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, the elite and educational officials took the lead in fostering geography education as an solution to overcome the crisis. Governmental and social support helped geography education secure an institutionally stable position, and passionate efforts by academic and educational circles enabled the subject of geography to secure a central position in national curriculum. In this context, school geography was constructed according to regional framework, for educational purposes of fostering patriotism through territorial attachment and understanding international affairs from the French perspective, this trend lasted until the 1960s. Since the early 1970s, educational philosophy emphasizing the learning skills was introduced, systematic geography was strengthened, and regional geography was transformed from the description to explain. Revised curriculum in 2008 will bring out a big change, because the regional geography was weakened, and the systematic geography was strengthened more. However, until recently Inversion model of expanded horizons and the spiral curriculum have been maintained as French tradition of geography education. This is interpreted as due to educational tradition of intellectualism and the school culture of textbook-centered classroom.
