Abstract
A ‘Child-Friendly City(CFC)’ is defined as a city where the four universal rights of the child are fully realized in accordance with the spirit of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This study explored the possibility of discussing a CFC in the social studies education for elementary school, which is directly related to the life’s spaces of the children. In order to achieve the study objective, this study reviewed existing literature on the concept of a CFC and evaluation criteria, and analyzed the social studies textbooks for elementary school. The results of this study showed that a CFC posed important implications to geography and environment education, mainly dealing with urban, regional, and local issues. Moreover, it will be necessary for the social studies for elementary school to reflect child-friendly perspectives in dealing with the life’s spaces of the children more actively. The results of this study will provide meaningful baseline information for broadening the interest and understanding on a CFC in the social studies for elementary school.
