Abstract
What are the roles of data collection activity in field in inquiry-based fieldwork? In order to investigate this research question, this study examined knowledge acquisition and experience of two groups of students who had participated in a inquiry-based fieldwork with versus without data collection in field. Two methods were used for collecting data: a figure analysis and a questionnaire survey. The main findings of the study are as follows: (1) The students (Group A) with data collection activity in field used more concrete and technological concepts in a more contextually relevant way based on their experience at the figure analysis test of a costal sand dune, while the description of the students (Group B) without the data collection experience has also been improved in quality but largely non-contextual. (2) The students of the Group A showed more agreement than those of Group B on survey items such as ‘understood why investigating’, ‘felt more responsibility for learning’, and ‘learned more by working with others.’ (3) Group A recognized more diverse benefits from fieldwork experience than their counterparts, such as development of observation skills, facilitation of experiential learning, development of analytical skills, kindling of a respect for the environment, development of personal skills, lessening of barriers between teachers and students, improving knowledge and understanding, etc.
