이 논문은 밀의 공리주의가 목적 그 자체인 인간의 존엄성에 대한 인정이라는 의무론적 기반 위에 서 있다는 주장을 내세우고 이를 정당화하고자 한다. 이런 해석에 단서가 되는 것은 벤담의 원칙이다. 이 원칙은 공리주의를 이기적 쾌락주의와 구별시켜주는 공리주의의 핵심 요소이다. 그런데 밀은 이 원칙이 규범적 전제가 아니라 공리 원칙의 “설명적 주석” 혹은 공리 계산에서의 “산술” 원리라고 주장한다. 나는 밀의 이런 주장에 맞서 벤담의 원칙이 공리주의 이론 체계에서 실제로 규범적 전제의 역할을 하고 있음을 보인다. 그런데 벤담의 원칙은 인간의 존엄성에 대한 인정이란 의무론적 전제로부터 공리주의적으로 도출된 것이다. 그런 의미에서 공리주의는 의무론적 바탕을 갖고 있다.
Abstract
This essay aims at demonstrating that Mills utilitarianism is based on the deontological premise of the recognition of human dignity as an end in itself. Bentham’s dictum is a suggestion for this interpretation of utilitarianism. This is also the most crucial element that distinguishes utilitarianism from egoistic hedonism. However, according to Mill the dictum does not refer to a normative presupposition of the principle of utility but to its “explanatory commentary” or “theorems of arithmetic” in the evaluation of happiness. Against Mill, I try to demonstrate that Bentham’s dictum in the utilitarian moral theory has the status of the normative basis. It is the normative basis of utilitarianism directly derived from the deontological recognition of the dignity of human being in the utilitarian manner.
