Abstract
This study aims at differences and similarities of Emmanuel Levinas and Immanuel Kant on Theodicy. Whereas Kant's critic of theodicy focused on theoretical issues in relation to the problem of evil, Levinas's critic is more existential approach based on his Holocaust experience. The Holocaust is one of the significant factors to turn and develop his main idea, ethic of the Other from ontology, which he adopted his teacher, Edmund Husserl. This study briefly observe what Kant's critic of theodicy focuses on. This section will show how Kant tried to differentiate natural evil from moral evil. Through this clarification, Kant acquired foundation that morality comes from human reason not from religion. On the other hand, Levinas's approach to theodicy based on his experience did not pursue a cause of evil and suffering, rather he analyzed suffering with phenomenological method. He claimed that suffering cannot be incompatible with one another, especially a justification for other's suffering. If suffering is regarded as one of the inevitable human conditions, Kant's and Levinas's correction of theodicy can contribute how we understand not only our own suffering but also other's suffering in our lives with more responsibility. Levinas asserts that this concept of responsibility can be realized in a form of ethic of the other.
