이 글의 목적은 그간의 비판적 논의들을 검토하고 사회경제적인 상황의 변화들을 고려하면서 하버마스의 시대진단, 즉 ‘생활세계 식민화’ 테제를 비판적으로 재구성하는 데에 있다. 이러한 작업은 오늘 우리의 현실이 요구하는 적합한 시대진단 방식을 모색하는 데에도 기여할 수 있을 것이다. 하버마스의 시대진단은 오늘날 한편으로는 그 적실성이 확대되고 있으면서도 이와 동시에 다른 한편으로는 그 한계 역시 드러나고 있는 것으로 보인다. 먼저 신자유주의적 경쟁과 효율성 논리의 전 지구적 확산을 통해서 삶의 전 영역이 시장화 되어 가고 있는 현실로 인해서 이 테제는 그 호소력과 현실 적합성이 확대되고 있는 것으로 보인다. 그렇지만 다른 한편으로 이 테제는 그것이 등장할 수 있었던 사회정치적 배경, 즉 서구 선진 국가들에서 이루어진 복지국가의 타협 자체가 오늘날 침식되고 있다는 점에서 그 생명력을 다한 측면도 있는 것으로 보인다. 이 글은 이런 상황들을 고려하면서, 하버마스의 시대진단 테제에 대한 비판적 재구성을 시도한다. 이를 위해 먼저 하버마스의 생활세계 식민화론의 핵심 내용을 간략히 요약할 것이다. 다음으로는 그간의 정치사회적 변화와 비판적 논평들을 참조하여 하버마스의 시대진단 테제를 평가하고 비판적 재구성이 필요한 요소들이 무엇인지를 구체적으로 살펴볼 것이다. 그리고 이에 기초하여 생활세계 식민화론에 대한 비판적 재구성의 방향과 내용을 제시할 것이다. 마지막으로 결론에서는 한국 사회의 현실을 염두에 두면서 그리고 동시에 재구성된 시대진단에 기초한 사회적, 정치적 대안의 모색을 염두에 두면서 이 글이 가지는 의미를 정리해 보고자 한다.
Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to reconstruct Habermas' Zeitdiagnose, i.e the colonization of lifeworld thesis critically. For this aim, I examined the critical comments so far given and considered the changed social and economical situations. This work may also contribute to the search for the proper Zeitdiagnose of our society. Today Habermas' Zeitdiagnose seems to increase its applicability on the on hand, but simultaneously to reveal its limits on the other hand. Its applicability increases because of the global proliferation of the neoliberal logic of competition and efficacy. Its applicability decreases because of the erosion of the social welfare state compromise, which was a background of Habermas' Zeitdiagnose. Considering this context, this thesis attempted critical reconstruction of Habermas' Zeitdiagnose. To fulfill this aim, firstly I summed up the main points of colonization thesis. Secondly, considering the critical comments so far given and the changed social and economical situations, I evaluated the thesis and suggested the elements to be redressed. And then 4I proposed the contents and orientations of the critical reconstruction. Finally, considering the contexts of our society, I explained the meanings of this work.
