이 글의 목적은 ‘차이에 대한 정념’, ‘본받음’, ‘공인의 보증’ 등으로 대표되는 아렌트적 계기들을 활용하여 공적 행복의 의미를 개인적 차원에서 해명하는 것이다. 이를 위해, 공적 행복의 의미는 우선 추상적 차원에서 ‘공적 활동에 참여함으로써만 경험할 수 있는 개인적 만족’으로 한정된다. 그리고 이러한 한정 하에서 공적 행복은 다시 아렌트적 계기들의 확장으로서 안정감, 자기 고양의 느낌, 자신감 등으로 구체화된다. 인격적 차원에서 이런 유형의 만족은 공적 활동을 통하지 않고서는 경험할 수 없다는 것이 이 글의 핵심 논제이기도 하다. 물론 아렌트 자신은 이러한 확장이나 구체화를 고려하지 않았으므로, 그러한 과정은 필자가 듀이, 앨더퍼, 파레크의 연구성과를 원용하여 보충하였다.
Abstract
This article aims to shed light on a concept of public happiness by using Hannah Arendt’s ideas such as the passion for distinction, the desire to excel another, and the seal of approbation. The concept of public happiness is, to begin with, defined as ‘individual satisfactions that can only be experienced by participating in public activities’. Next, this article looks around the significance and limitations of Arendt’s concept of public happiness. It is true that we cannot deny its significances. However, it is also plain that her concept has some difficulties about its exact meaning. Thus, I try to supplementarily reconstruct Arendt’s ideas of public happiness. The concept of public happiness is again proposed as individual satisfactions which is confirmed by security, self-enhancement, and self-confidence. She did, of course, not consider these connections, so I build it by utilizing the theories of John Dewey, Clayton P. Alderfer, and Bhikhu Parekh.
