Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate what the visual reasoning contributes to the logical reasoning, and how the visual reasoning contributes to the logical reasoning and problem solving when it is integrated into the logical reasoning. GSP, a software, helps students construct their own knowledges by providing them visual contents when they solve geometric problems. The experiment is conducted as a part of education for seven gifted students(all in 8th-grades). The researcher observes and analyzes a process presented during looking up the circumcenter of triangle in the GSP environment in which the researcher gives the students the definition of circumcenter that is a point laying on the same distance from each vertex of a triangle. The seven gifted children were grouped into three groups by the types of reasoning which they employed: (1) integrating the visual reasoning into the logical reasoning, (2)depending on the logical reasoning, (3) solving s problem by making use of the process of construction as only visual materials. The results show that gifted students who integrate their visual reasoning into their logical reasoning deepen their understanding of the problem, broaden their knowledges, and solve the problem with the meaningful way in the mathematics field. On the contrary, students who just relied on the logical reasoning did not get their deep understanding of the problem. I would suggest that we should help gifted students experience the visual reasoning, develop their visual reasoning abilities, and integrate their visual reasoning into their logical reasoning.
