Abstract
The purpose is to provide implications for the identification of gifted students and the development of gifted education contents and programs, by exploring characteristics of gifted students in the fields of computing and mathematics in terms of overexcitability and IQ and by analyzing them by gender and grade level. With this objective, Dabrowski’s overexcitability and Wechsler’s IQ test were conducted on 1,040 students recommended by teacher observation-recommendation system and on 257 students identified as gifted. The results were as follows. First, there was a statistically significant difference in overexcitability between students recommended by teachers in the fields of computing and mathematics, but no significant difference was found between gifted students. Second, the results by grade level showed that there was no significant difference in IQ between gifted students in elementary and middle school, but a significant difference was observed in overexcitability with elementary school students scoring generally higher on overexcitability dimensions. Third, for gifted students in computing, there was no significant difference in overexcitability by gender, but there was a significant difference in IQ. For mathematically gifted students, a significant difference was found in overexcitability by gender, but no significant difference existed in IQ. Fourth, in both gifted students in computing and mathematics, there were significant interactions between gender and grade level for emotional overexcitability, but the interaction patterns between the two fields were different.
