Abstract
Gifted education is often regarded as elitism for the privilege of the elite in society. According to the research literature, teachers tended to regard gifted education as elitism. Prejudice against gifted education could potentially affect the academic motivation and achievement of gifted students negatively. As the attitudes towards students and education that pre-service teachers have could last until they become in-service teachers and early identification of gifted students is crucial, the interviews with 13 South Korean pre-service primary school teachers and 7 lecturers who taught gifted education at a university were conducted about gifted education as elitism in this study. As a result of the interviews, most of the pre-service teacher interviewees did not see gifted education as elitism and argued that gifted education is education that fits individual students’ abilities and is needed for the students’ social and emotional development. Both pre-service teachers and lecturers were strongly opposed to using gifted education as a means for university entrance or higher level of education in South Korea and hoped gifted education function as its essential purpose: developing gifted students’ innate potential and helping their self-realisation.
