Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate expert opinions and validate content to formulate effective strategies for identifying and supporting highly gifted students in mathematics. A panel of 16 experts, comprising specialists in gifted education and mathematics/mathematics education, was selected. The study employed an online Delphi survey conducted via email in two rounds. The results of the Delphi survey underwent analysis using means, Content Validity Ratio (CVR), and consensus. The survey gathered opinions on various aspects, including the definition of highly gifted students in mathematics, the need for educational support, educational goals, entities responsible for identification, identification methods, critical factors in the identification process, methods of supporting highly gifted students in mathematics education, roles of supporting institutions, optimal timing for support, and the timing of educational interventions. The experts collectively agreed on the imperative to identify highly gifted students in mathematics and provide them with specialized educational support, outlining three key reasons for the significance of such assistance. The identified goals for highly gifted students in mathematics encompassed competence development, national talent cultivation, and provision of educational opportunities. Proposed educational methods involved offering individualized and tailored special education programs coupled with sustained support through mentoring. The findings of this study provided foundational data for the initial phase of research geared towards the continuous support and education of highly gifted students in mathematics.
