Abstract
Gifted education is shifting from nurturing a select few creative talents to providing broader opportunities so that more students can realize their potential. In this context, where learner’s flow experiences are emerging as a significant criterion of giftedness, this study examined the longitudinal interplay among flow conditions, learning behaviors, and flow experiences. An autoregressive cross-lagged model was conducted to analyze data, collected at three time points, from 529 students in grades 5 through 8 who participated in the online program provided by a gifted education center at K University. The results indicated that while autoregressive coefficients for flow conditions, learning behaviors, and flow experiences were all statistically significant, only certain cross-lagged coefficients reached significance. Specifically, when flow conditions were higher at an earlier time point, learning behaviors increased but flow experiences decreased at a later point. In turn, higher learning behaviors at an earlier point were associated with increased flow experiences later on. Moreover, higher flow experiences at a previous point were linked to lower subsequent flow conditions but higher learning behaviors. These findings suggest that learners’ flow levels in an online gifted environment are closely tied not only to the conditions that foster flow but also to the learning behavior they exhibit. Furthermore, flow experiences at one point can have lasting effects, potentially shaping future engagement and learning processes.
