『중용』의 자연과 인간의 협업에 관한 사유 - 성론(誠論)과 그에 대한 생태주의적 독해 문제를 중심으로 -

이 글은 『중용』의 자연과 인간의 협업에 관한 사유를 생태노동론의 시각에서 재해석하고 그 의의를 간략히 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 『중용』에서 천지는 생명의 터전이자 만물 생육의 주체이다. 이 천지는 도(道)로서 숨겨져 있으나, 동시에 자연의 안에서 생명 운동으로 부단히 자기를 드러낸다. 이렇게 천지가 주체로 여겨질 수 있었던 것은 원시종교의 자연신을 도(道)와 성(誠) 개념을 중심으로 철학화, 가치화했기 때문이다. 이 천지가 만물을 생육하는 원칙은 공생과 전체 자연의 조화를 목표로 한 협력의 추구라 할 수 있으며, 이러한 천지는 만물 혹은 인간과의 감응 관계 속에서 성실한 덕을 지닌 존재로 규정되는데, 이는 자연이 가치를 지닌다는 생태주의적 사유와 통한다. 『중용』은 천지에 의해 산출된 인간과 자연물은 모두 성실한 본성에 따라 일하는데, 인간만이 인위적 노력을 통해 타인의 덕성 뿐 아니라, 자연물의 자연성도 온전하게 발휘하도록 해주고, 천지가 하는 일을 돕는다고 여긴다. 그런데 이 인간의 천지만물에 대해 행하는 일은 농부의 농사를 떠올릴 때 그 의미가 명료해진다. ‘자연물을 이루어줌(成物)’은 농부가 작물에 대한 인(仁)과 지(知)를 바탕으로 그것이 자연성을 제대로 발휘하도록 하는 것을 뜻한다. 그리고 ‘천지의 화육을 도움(贊天地之化育)’은 농부가 자연의 만물 기르는 일을 거드는 협업을 할 때, 인간은 천지와 어깨를 나란히 하는 위대한 존재가 될 수 있음을 뜻한다. 이와 같은 『중용』의 자연과 인간의 협력에 관한 이론은 농혼(農魂)에 기반을 둔 것으로서 오늘날 상공업화된 농업을 생태적 농사로 되돌리는 철학적 지침이 될 수 있다는 점에서 커다란 의의가 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to construe the thoughts about the collaborative works of nature and humans of Zhong Yong with the view of eco-labor theory and succinctly indicate its implication. In Zhong Yong, heaven and earth is the foundation of life and subjective being that give birth to and raise all things. This heaven and earth are hidden as Dao but revealed themselves at the same time constantly with the life exercise within nature. The reason for heaven and earth to be deemed as subjective being is in the fact that the natural god of primitive religion has been philosophical and valuation around the concept of Dao and sincerity. This principle of nourishment of all things for the heaven and earth could be deemed as a pursuit of cooperative works with the goal of co-existence and harmony of whole nature, and this heaven and earth are defined as the being that contains the sincere virtue within the sensitive relationship for all things or humans, and this is similar to the ecological thoughts with the nature containing its innate value. Zhong Yong considered that human and natural objects formulated by the heaven and earth would work under the diligent intrinsic nature (sincerity), and only humans would make others completely assert not only the moral nature but also the natural feature of the natural objects through the superficial effort to help out the things that the heaven and earth do. However, the implication for works engaged by the human on all things in heaven and earth would be clarified when thinking about the works of a farmer. ‘Completing natural objects’ means the farmer to fully assert the natural feature based on benevolence and knowledge about the crops. In addition, ‘assisting the transforming and nourishing powers of Heaven and Earth’ means that, when the farmer is engaged in the collaborative works to help out the work to nurture all things of nature, the human may become a great being to stand shoulder to shoulder with the heaven and earth. Such a theory on the cooperation of nature and humans of Zhong Yong has its foundation in the spirit of farming and it has its significant implication that it could be the philosophical barometer to turn commercialized and industrialized farming back into the ecological farming today.
